Job Description

Johnson & Johnson seeks a Senior Principal Investigator to lead the design and deployment of Physical AI systems for autonomous laboratory experimentation. This hands-on role combines AI, robotics, and scientific reasoning to develop intelligent capabilities that optimize experimental workflows, detect and recover from errors, and improve discovery outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and validate AI models representing laboratory instruments, samples, robotic systems, and experimental workflows
• Implement adaptive optimization methods and error detection capabilities for autonomous laboratory experimentation
• Generate hypotheses for experimental failures and recommend discriminating follow-up experiments to improve reproducibility
• Build agentic systems that support experiment planning and execution monitoring across discovery cycles
• Translate scientific requirements into technical prototypes and production-ready capabilities while mentoring team members

Requirements

• PhD in artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, computer science, engineering, or related quantitative field
• Demonstrated track record of independently developing and deploying AI systems in physical or scientific environments
• Deep expertise in embodied AI, multimodal perception, state estimation, and digital twins
• Strong proficiency in active learning, Bayesian optimization, reinforcement learning, and multi-objective optimization
• Production-level experience with Python, modern ML frameworks, model deployment, and MLOps
• Knowledge of laboratory robotics, liquid handling, sensors, and instrument integration
• Experience with agentic AI, multi-agent systems, planning, and human-in-the-loop controls
